Steps to Follow When Someone Died at Home
Whether natural or unnatural, follow these steps:
- Ambulance Services
- Immediately contact your nearest preferred ambulance service to come out to your given address.
- The paramedics have to confirm that the person has died.
- When contacting the institutions, ensure to supply them with the following information:
- Reason for your call
- Name and Surname
- Contact number
- Street name and house number
- Area / suburb
- Complex - name & unit number
- Possible landmarks
- You must obtain the Declaration of Death form from the paramedics before they leave.
- SAPS
- Contact your nearest SA Police Station to come to your given address.
- The police officer needs to confirm that there are no signs of injury or suicide or homicide and that the death is of natural causes.
- You must obtain a SAPS 180 form from the officer confirming it as a natural death.
- Funeral Director
- Contact your preferred funeral director in order to remove the body of the deceased.
- Documents required:
- Deceased's ID / Passport / Birth Certificate
- Declaration of death form
- SAPS 180 Form
- Name & number of the deceased's doctor / Hospice / Clinic in order to obtain the death Certificate
- The Funeral Director will contact you for funeral arrangements.
- Family
- Contact the needed family & friends to inform them of the passing of the loved one.
